Goodbye 2016

Rain, however heavy, will have to stop, grieve how ever painful, will have to heal, happiness how ever euphoric, will have to pass and year 2016, however reluctant we are, will be gone soon.

Come join us on 27th December 2016 for the last meeting of the year at TMIKL, Jalan Imbi, Bankers Club.

This year, we celebrated the achievements of our members and also bade some sterling members goodbye.

Everyone has their own reasons to stay or to go, we at TMIKL wish you all the best and we sincerely hope that you left as an improved speaker and also brought along some pleasant memories of your toastmasters journey with you.

2016 for the better or worse, you will be missed.

Meeting # 800 in the park

The choice to choose between waking up early on a rainy Saturday morning to attend a toastmasters meeting or to sleep in was an easy decision to make.

Despite the heavy rain, the risk of being struck by a lightning bolt or drowning in a flood, it was a spirited turn out. At TMIKL, whether it is rain or shine, the show must go on.

We even had a guest Kazuhisa Hirano, all the way from Japan, who found out about our meeting via http://easy-speak.org. This is a testament that besides making you a better leader and communicator, Toastmasters International also helps you to connect people from around the world.

Thank you friends of TMIKL, Gabriel Chong, Justin Jesunathan, & Intan Nurshiela & Ikram for gracing the meeting. All of you gave up your Saturday morning to be with us, we couldn't be more thankful because you guys are definitely our sunshine after the rain!

The best thing about the rain is the rainbow that appears afterwards, the best thing about a toastmasters meeting is the extra motivation to be a better speaker.

Hopefully we can have more meetings like this in the future, minus the chaos. A big thank you to all who attended meeting #800, because you made it happen!

The fearless Jony Lim

Jony Lim
Once in a while we get members who defy all odds, breaking speed record en-route to attaining the Competent Communicator goal. Some people are just born sprinters, Jony did it in less than one year! Which makes him the second fastest, just behind Ceyvian Chan in getting Competent Communicator title in TMIKL.

Jony came into TMIKL as a rough diamond, but underneath the rough edges, the dazzling bright glitters are just waiting for time to sparkle. He wowed us with his ice breaker speech on 28th July 2015 in high spirit, high volume, and highly charged body language. I must say this is the power of youth.

Over time, senior members at TMIKL helped Jony to become a more technical speakers, sticking to the objectives of the CC manual to bring out the best in how he crafted his speech, how to amplify his stage presence through vocal variety, body language, different approaches to engage the audience.

In his speech #10 on 28th June 2016,  Nelson Mandela was his reference for inspirations.

"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."

Those words quoted from Nelson Mandela is the reflection of our fearless Jony Lim! Our best wishes to you, good luck in your studies, all the best over there in US of A!

Welcome to the CC club, Nik Ayman!

Picture taken from Facebook

TMIKL is very proud to produce yet another quality CC on 25th October 2016.

Can we hear many rounds of ear-piercing applause👏👏👏 for Nik Ayman to congratulate him for completing his inspirational project speech #10. In fact, he deserves nothing less than a standing ovation.

Nik Ayman's toastmasters journey started back in 8th October 2013. He progressed on his own pace, he has only himself to beat. It took awhile, but slowly and surely, he reached the 1st check point of the lifelong Toastmasters' marathon on 25th October 2016.

Speech #10 was a showcase of how far he came along in this Toastmasters journey. And he did it in style by winning the best project speech speaker of the day!

My admiration for CC Nik Ayman is in his calm demeanor when delivering speeches. He always have the interest of his audience in mind, as speeches always catch up with the current affairs. He keeps his poker face when delivering a joke and the punch line always knock you out like a brick hitting you in the face from no where. You totally never expected that.

Nik Ayman, our best wishes to you, now it is the time to find your niche and decide which advanced communicator manual you would like to use.

May you go strength to strength, at the same time, inspire more of our members to achieve their CC goal too!

We at TMIKL will continue to witness your growth in communication and leadership skills. Our best wishes to you. Congratulations again!

Next Meeting 28th November 2016

It's almost curtain call for 2016. Time of the year again to mourn your losses, what-ifs, near misses or lament about one who got away.

Of course the mood doesn't have to be this somber, because why cried over split milk when you can buy a new one?

You can still indulge in the current moment, count you blessings, celebrate your successes, express your gratitude for loved ones or reminisce on all your efforts to make the world a better place than it was in 2015.

Newly minted CC, Nik Ayman will take control of the meeting on 22th November 2016, Tuesday, 7p.m onwards.

Come celebrate with us, for the 1st timer, who knows your 1st meeting at TMIKL would be your destiny for a changed life!

Your Toastmasters Experience

(With acknowledgement to Tamala Takahashi)

Here are a few suggestions to make your Toastmasters experience the best it can be when you are starting out a little less than confident when speaking up in front of a group, at work, or with strangers.

1. Pick a Toastmasters club that feels right. If you go to a Toastmasters club and you feel intimidated, or overlooked, try a different club. The program is designed very well, but every club uses the program differently. Find a club where you feel comfortable and safe from the beginning. And don't be afraid to switch clubs if your current club is no longer meeting your needs.

2. Participate in every meeting in some way. Start with ballot counter or timer - the smaller roles - first. Then work your way up to Toastmaster after 4 or 5 months. Make sure you speak at every meeting in some way.

3. Do your ice breaker as soon as you can. That is the first speech in the program. Then dedicate yourself to doing a speech every 3-4 meetings.

4. Work with your mentor. If you aren't assigned a mentor, ask to have one. If you are not totally comfortable with your mentor, ask someone who you are comfortable with to help you (even if they aren't your official mentor). Having someone who will work one-on-one with you makes a big difference.

5. After a few months, participate in the speech contests. This is a great way to try something hard in a safe place. After you've participated in a speech contest, "regular" speeches are easier.

6. Don't stop after you feel like you've made progress. Keep going through the program. Many people find after a few months, they start to get some legs and feel much better speaking up. Don't be fooled that this first success is all you need! Getting over the first "hump" of shyness is just the beginning. The real, significant, life changes happen after you've moved into the advanced manuals and leadership projects. I've learned more as District Governor than I have at any level of my experience as a Toastmaster.

7. Keep up with the leadership side of the program. Even though you may be focusing on the speaking as a way to overcome shyness, the truth is, the leadership side of the program does far more to bring about confidence than the speaking side. Building leadership skills, such as collaboration, delegation, project management, conflict management, and crafting a mission, will benefit you in all aspects of your life. Also, as an introvert, it's easier to work on, to be honest. You can "lead from behind" so to speak. The more leadership skills you practice, the more confident you'll be, and speaking will be easier, because you know "you got this". I finished my leadership projects long before my speaking projects, because as someone who was still developing her extroverted side and getting over shyness, I found the leadership projects to be much more approachable and less daunting.

8. Go to the Toastmasters Leadership Institutes and conferences. These are very low-cost opportunities to learn more about both leadership and public speaking. Go to as many as you can and learn as much as you can.

9. And lastly, as much as you can, if someone asks for help with a club contest, or a membership drive, or something else, say "yes". The more you work together with other toastmasters, you'll build your reputation. Building reputation is a huge confidence booster. Also, having a "job" gives you a higher purpose, and makes it easier to ask for things and be assertive.

Toastmasters is not a magic bullet. However, it's a very good tool for overcoming shyness that has worked for so many people.

And a quick note on shyness vs. introvertism. These are not the same thing. Toastmasters may not change your natural inclination to be an introvert. However, what it will do, is help you learn to be confident in who you are, what you believe, and your skill set. That will serve you well no matter what you do, and no matter how much you lean towards the introverted side.
