Let Your Body Speak

Body language has always been a vital part of communication.
Either on stage or as part of inter-personal communication. As part of TMIKL's effort to underscore the importance of body language, we have devoted an entire meeting's theme to the effective use of body language.

We had a very "animated" Lucy Zane as our Toastmaster of the Evening. Making her "virgin" attempt to be a TME. She did a wonderful job.
We had an interesting Table Topics session with each topic incorporating the element of body language. Very nicely done. I was equally stumpped when I had to answer my table topic question about action speaking louder than words.

In the end, our new member, Sookling took home the award of being the best table topics speaker with her humourous account on how body language actually speaks volumes compared to just mere words.

We had 2 assignment speeches and one more that never happened.
Ismail Omar gave an amusing account of living every moment to its fullest and telling people about how we feel as we will never know which moment will be our last.
I personally found that very inspirational and Ismail's speech style certainly gave us a twist to his story.

We also had Louis, our youngest member talking about Dodgeball. A game that can be played by both boys and girls on the same court!
Louis's courage to speak, to step above his comfort zone is very much admirable. As much as his love for the game of dodgeball.

We had a very "veteran" but young at heart (aren't we all young at heart) DTM Lachmichand who gave an interesting evaluation and some trip down memory lane on how TMIKL was during the "good old days". Surely things were cheaper, politicians were less corrupt but we the younger TMIKL still believe that the spirit of Toastmastering is still alive and strong with us!

Overall, we learnt a great deal from each other and we look forward for our next fun filled meeting on Festivities. Hopefully we will have some ketupat, lemang, rendang and mooncakes to munch on the next meeting!

Rising up to the Challenge

We all have challenges in our lives and as one of our members so brilliantly put it, some of our challenge is to go up on stage to speak in front of a crowd.

But here in TMIKL, we support each other in overcoming challenges such as these by providing a condusive environment to deliver a speech and grow as a seasoned public speaker and as an individual.
This meeting is one testament to that. We had an unusually big turn out, with THREE past presidents in one meeting and DTM Sandrasegaran dropping by as our General Evaluator. It was certainly an interesting evening.

We had an interesting Table Topic session with topics ranging from the most challenging thing that you have done to an amusing topic on Never Awakening a sleeping dragon which was brilliantly tied to personal developtment. Enough of talk, let some of the pictures do the talking:

First up, we had our Seasoned Winning Guest, Lorna Fisher who never fails to win something from TMIKL whenever she visits us. This time, she won the best table topics speaker with her table topic scenario of leaving her family overseas for a financially rewarding job/opportunity.

Cyril with the benefits of being a bachelor boy. His ideas flowed so well that he had me thinking that he bribed our Table Topics Master Wai Chee before the meeting!

Next we had Ismail Omar with solving a Sudoku puzzle. Clever use of the board as a prop in his Getting Comfortable with Visual Aids.

Mas Rizal, our Humourous speech man. Remember to call him whenever you need a tickle on the funny bone once in a while.

It was certainly a memorable evening. It was certainly anything but NOT a reticent evening. The crowd was warm as usual, there was a whole lot of laughter throughout the evening.
Our next meeting will be on the 8th of September 2009. We hope to see all of you (or better yet, MORE of you) in our next meeting!

Rise Up To The Challenge!

Always wanted to do something but feel afraid of failure (or even success?)

Yes folks, its time to rise up to the challenge. And take that yourself to the next level!
That's our theme for our meeting today (25th August 2009).
Today we have a wide vartiety of project speakers:

Chong Wai Chee
Sidney Ng
Mas Rizal
Ismail Omar

Its going to be an awesome night with the "Winning Humourous Speech" (so good that we KNOW we will win!). So, be there or you will be missing out on all the fun!

The word of the day is "reticent" which means inclined to keep silent; reserved. An interesting to word to rise up to the challenge! We hope that the members and guests attending this meeting will stop being reticent and start rising up to the challenge to face problems and challenges head on!

Look forward to seeing you all there!

TMIKL's Long Week

Wow! What a week it has been for us here at TMIKL. It was a tiring and an awesome week for us. Trust me when I say its quite difficult to sum in all up in just one post.

It started off with our upbeat Merdeka meeting:

With our President with his Humourous Speech, "Taking Care of Daniel". Complete with "CHAK" action and all the jazz. He had the floor in stitches and went on to do the Club proud in winning the division level contest.

We also had Ismail Omar with a short tour de la force of the French languange using a very interesting approach. You just had to be there to listen to his speech for yourself. Genius.

We had a few guests, one of them Andy won the best Table Topics. Best of all, he WILL be joining us. Kudos to Andy!

Later in the week, we took part in the Division contest which took place in Melia Hotel to win:

Best Humourous Speech - Mas Rizal, CC
Runner Up Evaluation - Elizabeth Xavier

Both of our representatives did our Club proud by emerging as winners in their respective contests. It is our hope that the Club will breed more future champions and perhaps even do MALAYSIA proud by representing the country for International contests.

That was just the tip of the iceberg,
We had our 31st Anniversary Dinner on Saturday. Everyone dressed in their nines. It was indeed an evening to behold.

The event started with the Past Presidents Cake Cutting Ceremony

With very intesting Table Topics, from getting lost to KL, the benefits of public speaking, to bankers turned cab drivers we certainly entertained and glued to our seats. We had a lot more than food to chew on. A generous buffet spread and sinful cakes to whet our appetites and ensure that we don't starve.

In the spirit of TMIKL and everything imporntu, we had Michael and Wai Chee to perform a dance for us! Yes...it was NOT planned but I think they managed to wow the audience with their dancefloor moves. I think they brought the house down and reminded everyone on how John Trovolta brought the sexyback in Saturday Night Fever and Greese..

We even had our Guest Speaker, Loghendran who entertained us with his speech on how Toastmasters actually molded him to be the leader he is today and the importance of evaluations. I certainly benefitted greatly from his speech. Photographed below with our President, Mr Mas Rizal!

Our best Table Topics for the evening, Lorna. I certainly hope she did get a GPS in her gift. Then again, I think she rather ask for help with the friendly Malaysians and promote Toastmasters to more people.

A big kudos to the people that made it happen:

Organizing Chairperson: Elizabeth Xavier for her tireless devotion in making this event a success. It was her baby and she was a very concerned parent.

Mas Rizal, for helping her and in making sure everything is place for the final event:

And who can ever forget, the two emcees for the evening Cyril Jonas and Sandra for entertaining the crowd and ensuring that the evening was a pleasurable one.

Also, the TMIKL team who were busy selling tickets and promoting the event. Without your direct and indirect support, this event would have not been such a resounding success!

Everybody went back as a happy camper, with a full tummy, new friends met, old friends reunited, an inspirational thought in mind, the knowledge of NOT ending up in Puduraya, and of course a "lucky draw" gift. It was indeed a wonderful evening not to be forgotten.

Speech of the Week

From the movie "Any Given Sunday"
Al Pacino inspires the group of football players.

TMIKL. Go for it!

What a way to start the term by having the term "Go For It".
For once we had more members than guests in a long long while.
Don't get us wrong, we are proud of it. In fact, we believe in the expression "the more, the merrier"

The meeting started on time, although I did not arrive on time.
In typical TMIKL style, we had changes, embraced them, and improvised.
Yes, we TMIKL-ians are Masters of Improvisation.

Cyril Jonas, our Past President became the Sergent At Arms as Louis Gan, our SAA could not make it.

While Sandra Ghouse took the challenge of being the Table Topics Master with just a few minutes notice. Talk about inpromtu preparations.

We had a few TableTopics contestants:
- Myself (Sidney Ng)
- Cyril Jonas
- Emily
-Lorna
- Lucy
- Sok Ling
- Michael

We had 2 great assignment speeches, Michael Oon, a veteran Toastmaster, with his folk story of The Brahmin, Jackal and the Tiger (or something along those lines). Next, we had a heartwarming speech by our newest and upcoming speaker, Chong Wai Chee, barely in her 3rd speech, she has managed to capture our attention.

The meeting went on time. We finally had a winner for our Table Topics, ::drumroll:: it was none other than one of our Guests from KL Advanced Toastmasters Club, Lorna Fisher. She inspired us with Carpe Diem, or Seizing the Day. I think that went quite well with our theme Go For It!

Our next meeting will be on 11th August 2009, same time (7.45pm) , same place (Banker's Club, AMODA Building, Jln Imbi).
We hope to see you there on the 11th!

TMI KL's Humorous Speech Contest 2009

Everyone wants to be funny.

Many try.

Few succeed.

TMIKL just recently held its Humorous and Evaluation Contest on the 14th of July 2009.

With a room filled with eager Toastmasters and Guests, the event started with the Chairperson giving his Opening Speech and introducing the contestants. Despite having only 2 contestants of the Humorous Speech Contest, Mas Rizal, our Club President and Ismail Omar, a veteran Toastmaster; we are assured of a square fight.

Mas Rizal gave a profound speech on taking care of his newborn son, Daniel which hit a few familiar notes with parents and provides a quirky outlook of being a new parent. His experiences with his son left the floor in stitches.
Ismail Omar gave took the floor down memory lane to his experiences with sports. With his rendition of how “handphones” were like back in his time, he gave the floor a good laugh while relating his various childhood experiences.

After the break, we were educated on Getting Along in a Relationship by Penny Chin, from ITC Bintang Toastmasters. This brought the meeting to the start of the Speech Evaluation Contest. She was evaluated by the contestants – Mas Rizal, Elizabeth Xavier, Richard Toh, Ismail Omar and Emily Tan who did a speech evaluation for the first time.

Many insights were shared and all the participants did extremely well in being constructive and supportive in giving out evaluations.

The night ended with prize giving session with the crowning of our winners:

Humorous Speech Contest: Mas Rizal

Speech Evaluation Contest: Elizabeth Xavier
