Learning from Sports

This year, Malaysia achieved the best-ever SEA Games results. What can we learn from sports? I just attended the Speech Contest of the MIM-YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME. There are no loosers - only winners and learners. As sportspersons grow with sports, they will learn the universal values listed below. Similarly, as we journey in life, we can learn from these values.

Character - The inner strength that helps build a better person
It’s easy t give up and blame others when you lose but having character means believing in yourself and trying again. And when you win, stay humble and continue to improve yourself.

Confidence - Believing in your own skills and abilities
As you practise and get better at something you’ve just learnt, you realize it’s not so hard anymore. In fact, now you know you can do it!

Determination - The drive to succeed
In whatever you do, always give it your all. When you aim to do well and try your best, success will be within your reach.

Discipline - Sticking to a plan
Sometimes we must do things which we may not enjoy, like waking up early to jog. But this will help us keep fit and get better in the sport.

Fair Play - Respect for the game and its players
No matter how much you may want to win a game, always follow the rules and respect the other players. You’re only a true winner when you win fair and square.

Leadership - The ability to inspire others
A team captain leads and others follow. Even in a warm up session, they can inspire their team mates to work hard and give their best.

Perseverance - Never giving up
Sometimes, we may not do as well as we hoped. When this happens, don’t give up. Try again and again until you succeed.

Teamwork - Working together to accomplish a goal
Good teamwork can help you do well. When everyone joins forces and does their part, you will achieve more.

Unity - The joy of togetherness
Sometimes you may have to play with someone you don’t know very well. Remember you are on the same team. By learning to get along and work together, your team and you will have more fun and a better chance at winning.
